Bangued is the municipal capital of the province of Abra. It was founded in 1598 and became the home of the provincial government of Abra on July 25, 1861. The name Bangued means “roadblock” and the town was called by this name because in the old days, the residents put roadblocks on all the roads that leads to the place to prevent Spaniards from entering their area. When the Spanish colonizers led by Juan de Salcedo tried to penetrate the area, they found stones blocking the roads leading to the community and asked one of the natives they met along the road what was the name of the place and his answer was “banggen” thinking that the Spaniards were asking about the roadblocks. After the Spaniards successfully penetrated the communities, they developed the place and established towns and barangays. And the place where many obstacles were found was named “Bangen” and the province they called “Abra”. At present, Bangued have a population of nearly 49,000 living in 31 barangays. Its economy mostly depends on agriculture especially palay and corn planting.
